Koios
Terms of service
The terms Koios — the paper reader and research workspace at koios.dev, “the app” below, with its desktop app, its Companion and its proxy — is offered under. How it handles data is a separate page, the privacy policy.
Last updated 30 October 2026.
The short version. A personal project, free of charge, with its source public at github.com/saurav717/reader. It runs in your browser; your library, your projects and your data are in your own Google Drive and on machines you choose. It can run code and AI agents where you tell it to, and share what you choose to share. It comes with no warranty, and it is not a backup.
What this is
The app searches public indexes of research papers and opens papers from the places that publish them; keeps what you collect in your Google Drive and shows your Google Calendar beside it; explains papers and answers questions about them with AI models; turns a paper into a project — code, data, experiments and a draft — that runs on Google Colab, on a server you link, or on your own computer through the optional Companion, with coding agents you run under your own accounts; compiles a paper for you; and lets you share a project with people you invite. A small proxy, run by me, fetches what a browser cannot, relays a few features on the site's own keys for the people signed in, and holds the little that collaboration and moving files between machines need.
Using it
You may use the app for your own research, reading and work, and you must be at least 13 years old to do so. In using it you agree to:
- obtain papers only in ways the sources allow — arXiv, the publishers and the indexes the app searches each have their own terms, and respecting them, including any sign-in you make in the reader's browser pane, is yours to do;
- not use the app to redistribute material you do not have the right to redistribute, and not to share, in a project, material you may not share with its members;
- use the proxy, and the AI, search, browser, compile, meeting and mail features it pays for, as a person working, not as a service: use that is automated, abusive, or far beyond ordinary personal use may be limited or turned off for an account;
- keep any credentials you give the app — a Google account, a GitHub or Overleaf token, a Granola key, a key for an AI model, a server's token — under your own control. Those kept in a browser are usable by whoever can use that browser; those the Companion keeps, by whoever can use that user on that computer;
- follow the terms of each service the app reaches for you — Google (including Colab's rules on what may run there), Anthropic, OpenAI, Zoom, Granola, Recall.ai, Overleaf, GitHub, Cloudflare and the rest — and pay for what they bill you for: your own API keys, your own Cloudflare account, the Colab or server time you use;
- record a meeting only where you may, with the consent the law and the people in it require;
- keep whatever you make with the app, and whatever an AI model or agent makes with it, within the law and the rights of others.
If you run your own copy of the app, or deploy the proxy yourself, that copy is yours to operate and these terms do not govern it.
Your computer, and the machines you run code on
Installing the Companion lets the app run code, terminals and agents on your computer as you, and, by default once an account claims it, opens a tunnel so that your other browsers and machines can reach it from the internet, guarded by its token. Linking a server, or running on Colab, lets the app run code there as you. Coding agents the app starts — Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and others — run under your own accounts with their providers, can read, change, create and delete files in the project they are given, and act on what they read. You decide what to pair, what to link, where to put a project's files, which agent to run and what to let it do, and you are responsible for what runs on your machines and accounts as a result. The privacy policy says exactly what each of these exposes and to whom.
Sharing a project
A project is private until you share it. Sharing one shows its members what the privacy policy lists under shared projects, and sends the people you invite an email in your name. What you put in a shared project is yours to have the right to share, and what others put in it is theirs; I provide the room and do not moderate it. Stop sharing, and the room is deleted.
No warranty
The app is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. It may be wrong, it may be unavailable, and it may stop working when something it depends on changes. What an AI model or agent says or does is not checked by me and may be wrong, and an agent given a project can change it in ways you did not intend.
It is not a backup. Your library, projects and data live in your own Google Drive and on the machines you chose, which hold the only copies anyone is keeping; a copy in a browser is a cache the browser may clear; a copy on a compute machine lasts as long as that machine; a move between machines is complete only when the app says so.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, I am not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of the app, including lost data, lost time, anything that happens to the files it writes to your Drive, a repository, a computer or a machine, anything an agent or an AI model it calls says or does, anything that reaches your computer through a tunnel you left open, and any cost a third-party service bills you for.
Not affiliated
The app is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google, arXiv, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Crossref, Unpaywall, GitHub, Overleaf, Anthropic, OpenAI, Zoom, Granola, Recall.ai, Cloudflare, or any publisher whose papers it can open. Their names are used only to say what it talks to.
Changes and availability
The app may change or be taken down at any time, without notice, and an account whose use breaks these terms may be limited or closed. If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them, and every edit is public in the app's repository, where this page lives as public/terms/index.html.
